Sciatica Pain - Ways to Cure Your Sciatica Pain

Inflammation and pressure on the nerve root is the cause of sciatica nerve pain. There are various treatments that can help to relieve this pain. The majority of treatment options are non-invasive and relatively simple. While in some more extreme cases, surgery may be necessary if the spinal cord has suffered any damage.

The use of pain killers is the most common way sciatica pain is treated. The usual medications used are anti-inflammatory and non-steroid muscle relaxers. Due to the high risk of addiction, opiate-based pain killers are used only as a last resort. Most health care providers will usually also suggested daily exercise to decrease sciatica pain.

The best treatment for sciatica pain is making lifestyle changes to help ease or prevent sciatica symptoms all together. By stretching and strengthening the leg and back muscles associated with the sciatic nerve, you can alleviate the pressure on the nerve which in turn will help ease your pain.

Simply by changing your posture, you can alleviate sciatica pain and back injuries. Bad posture could be putting a lot of extra stress on your spine, discs, muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves. When you're sitting, make sure that you're not slouching. You should not be leaning too far back or sitting too straight. You also don't want your head to be too far forward.

The human head weighs in at about 15 pounds, so if it isn't supported properly this can cause neck and upper back pain due to muscular strain. Don't let your head fall forward, keep a long neck properly supporting your head.

Keep the shoulders down and back, over the hips. When sitting for long periods of time be sure to have good back support. You will also want to stand and move around ever thirty or so minutes to help take pressure off of the back from sitting.

You need to maintain proper posture while standing too. Again you neck should be long not allowing your head to jut forward or fall to the side, shoulders should be back and don't allow them to hunch up towards your ears.

Keep your shoulders directly over your hips; hips should be in a neutral position. Your feet should be a comfortable distance apart with your weight evenly distributed over them.

If you want to be sure you are standing with good posture, look at the position of your shoulders. Are they aligned with your ears? Your chin should also be parallel to the ground, if it isn't you are allowing your head to fall forward or backwards which puts stress on the neck and back muscles.

Posture matters when you're sleeping, too. It is terrible for your back to lie down with a pile of pillows propping you up, or to sleep on your stomach. You can keep your spine in proper alignment by putting a pillow under your knees to keep them lightly elevated when you're lying on your back. Put a pillow between your knees when you're sleeping on your side.
