5 steps to purchasing pillows that reduce the chances of back and neck pain

People spend hours finding shoes so their feet won't hurt. By the same token, you need to find pillows so your neck and back will not hurt. So - choose your pillows carefully by going thru the following steps:

1) Choose a pillow from a retailer that allows you to return the pillow even if you have slept on it. The least expensive pillow is expensive if it just doesn't work. And, the best pillows will come from a company that also ensures that their pillow will not go flat. Plus, be totally certain the company offers a large range of sizes and heights.

2) Buy a pillow to fit your body proportions. Everybody's size differs so no one pillow is will fit everyone. A big man has bigger proportions and, needs a bigger pillow. A little, petite lady will need a thinner pillow.

3) Choose a pillow that fits how you sleep. To reduce your chances of neck and back pain, you need to concentrate on getting a pillow that keeps your neck and backbone aligned. So:

- if you are a back-sleeper, you want a pillow that fits the back of your neck while stopping your head from tilting forward. If you can see the your feet while resting on your pillow, the pillow is too thick, which implies that your back and neck will not be in alignment.
- if you are a side-sleeper, you need a pillow with a higher loft that fits between your head and shoulder. If you can feel your head tilt down or up, then you don't have the correct size pillow. That head bend will improve your chances of neck and back pain the following day.
- if you sleep on your tummy then you want a pillow that is thinner. The best pillow for a stomach sleeper is one that does not cause your neck and back to bend.

4) Try the pillow for one or two days. If the pillow is not comfortable and does not keep your backbone and neck in alignment, then return your pillow for a different size (you did do step one didn't you?).

5) If you choose a pillow from a retailer that doesn't provide a warranty against going flat, then think about replacing your pillow at least every year or thereabouts, since most pillows will go flat in that timeframe.

Look after yourself and get a decent pillow that can help reduce those back and neck pains while getting that deep, comfortable, sleep you need. You will be glad you did!
