Sciatica Stretches - When And How They Can Help Lower Back Pain

Sciatica stretches are really workouts that are practiced to be able to loosen muscles in the component of the buttocks that trigger the compression of the sciatic nerve or symptoms like these and so you may have to do some back stretching exercises.

These stretches are also utilized to reduce the bulging of the disc situated within the lumbar spine. They're also utilized to relieve adhesions of soft tissue about the nerve.

The workouts have a lot of advantages but the poor use of the stretches can only make matters worse rather than helping you to improve your condition.

The stretching of the muscles producing the sciatica symptoms are often pointed to the piriformis, which is the muscle situated in the lower buttock.
These have different points of reference depending on the location of the sciatic nerve among different people.

This nerve may transverse over the muscle, may go under it, or may even pass through its middle. When this runs under or through the piriformis, abnormal tightening of the muscle may cause compression of the sciatic nerve.

This will cause the pain and other symptoms experienced. Other variations in the stretching are all geared for the piriformis muscle which requires inward rotation and flexion of the hip joint. Basically, this involves bending the leg and pulling the knee towards the chest and then doing this across and towards the opposite shoulder.

The McKenzie exercises are another kind of sciatica stretches, named after Robin McKenzie who is a physical therapist. The exercises commonly used under this group involve the backward bending or the extension of the lumbar spine. This is utilized for the purpose of pressing the disc material that bulges forward and away from the nerve branches forming the larger sciatic.

There are also actual stretches for the sciatic nerve. This is for the purpose of placing tension on the sciatic nerve so that the various adhesions of soft tissues are eliminated thereby allowing it more movement. Sometimes, this is termed "nerve flossing" which involves stretching of the symptomatic leg, where bending is also done alternately with straightening.

Although this can be helpful for those suffering from sciatica for a long time now, care should be taken as this can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve and will worsen the symptoms. Because of this, stretching for the sciatic nerve must only be done by the experts or under the direct supervision of a health care provider.

The various stretching workouts for sciatica are all useful and when utilized successfully, can assist to alleviate the symptoms and stop the recurrence of the condition.

5 steps to purchasing pillows that reduce the chances of back and neck pain

People spend hours finding shoes so their feet won't hurt. By the same token, you need to find pillows so your neck and back will not hurt. So - choose your pillows carefully by going thru the following steps:

1) Choose a pillow from a retailer that allows you to return the pillow even if you have slept on it. The least expensive pillow is expensive if it just doesn't work. And, the best pillows will come from a company that also ensures that their pillow will not go flat. Plus, be totally certain the company offers a large range of sizes and heights.

2) Buy a pillow to fit your body proportions. Everybody's size differs so no one pillow is will fit everyone. A big man has bigger proportions and, needs a bigger pillow. A little, petite lady will need a thinner pillow.

3) Choose a pillow that fits how you sleep. To reduce your chances of neck and back pain, you need to concentrate on getting a pillow that keeps your neck and backbone aligned. So:

- if you are a back-sleeper, you want a pillow that fits the back of your neck while stopping your head from tilting forward. If you can see the your feet while resting on your pillow, the pillow is too thick, which implies that your back and neck will not be in alignment.
- if you are a side-sleeper, you need a pillow with a higher loft that fits between your head and shoulder. If you can feel your head tilt down or up, then you don't have the correct size pillow. That head bend will improve your chances of neck and back pain the following day.
- if you sleep on your tummy then you want a pillow that is thinner. The best pillow for a stomach sleeper is one that does not cause your neck and back to bend.

4) Try the pillow for one or two days. If the pillow is not comfortable and does not keep your backbone and neck in alignment, then return your pillow for a different size (you did do step one didn't you?).

5) If you choose a pillow from a retailer that doesn't provide a warranty against going flat, then think about replacing your pillow at least every year or thereabouts, since most pillows will go flat in that timeframe.

Look after yourself and get a decent pillow that can help reduce those back and neck pains while getting that deep, comfortable, sleep you need. You will be glad you did!

Have Back Pain ? A Chiropractor Could Be The Relief You Need

Back pain is the beginning of getting old. It makes you feel old and, worse, it keeps you from doing what you need to do to feel young. If your back is hurting and you aren't ready for the rocking chair, it may be time to see a chiropractor.

It doesn't take a major injury to make your back hurt. Sometimes it's something small, almost silly, that causes the problem. One woman "threw her back out" when she was unfolding her card table for the weekly bridge game.

One guy who played volleyball on the beach every weekend hurt his back during a game. He wasn't very old, even though his wife thought he was probably too old to be playing volleyball every weekend.

But he didn't need to be old. All he had to do was reach and twist at the same time in an unaccustomed manner and something popped.

Young people are less likely to hurt their backs because they are more flexible and resilient than their elders. Children almost never suffer a back injury but older kids who get involved in high impact, extreme sports can push themselves too hard. Competitive sports can be a set-up for back injuries.

However it happens and whenever it happens, even a minor back injury can cause pain that can lead to other problems. When your back hurts and movement is uncomfortable, you are less likely to get the exercise you need. Extended periods of inactivity can lead to weight gain and a decreased level of overall fitness.

You might stop doing all sorts of things you used to take for granted and depend on someone else to do them for you. When it gets to be too much trouble to get into the car to drive to a friend's birthday party, you are on your way to being old.

Fortunately, many injuries that cause a lot of pain are not serious and don't have to make you old before your time. They can be dealt with safely and easily by a Chiropractor.

Lower Back Pain Stretching Exercises

The old way of treating back pain was bed rest and pain killers. In fact, I was told two months ago when my back pain began to go to bed for a month. However, more modern thoughts on the subject are that modest exercise is better for your back.

I, for one, could not lie in bed for a month because of a backache, because while my back was at its worst, I could not stay in one place for over a minute or two and sleep was almost impossible.

I was in too much pain to get to the medical doctor's surgery and I was not offered a home visit. So, I merely sat at home and waited to feel better. Then my wife organized a masseur to come around.

The massage helped, but she also gave me some stretching exercises to try, which I have since seen mentioned by some physiotherapists on the Internet.

To start with, she suggested strolling as far as I could every day. Set attainable goals, but extend them whenever you reach them. Allow yourself one break on both the outward and homeward journeys and after a while, try to do without the break.

This has helped very well for me and from not being able to walk to the bathroom a month ago, I can now walk around 350 yards without a rest break. I place most of the reason for my recovery, such as it is, down to walking.

I have a slipped disc and a trapped sciatic nerve, so leaning backwards was very painful for me (and still hurts), but I discovered that rotating at the hips helps loosen things up.

There are two ways, I do this: 1] place your hands on your hips and push down or 2] clasp your hands behind your head; then standing with feet apart or sitting on a seat with no back, rotate your upper body as far as you can in a circle to the right eight times and then to the left. Increase the repetitions as and when you are able.

Sitting on a chair with a high back, reach back over your shoulders and grip the back of the chair (or you may grip the sides of the chair). Then keeping your bottom still, attempt to turn to the left eight times and then to the right. Take it slowly, no erratic movements, but actually push.

Lying on your back, bring one knee up to your body; pull it if you have to. First one knee eight times, then the other, and then both together. A variation on this is to lie on the floor, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Then place one foot on the other knee and pull that knee towards you. The second version can also be done seated.

Lying on your back, lift your straight legs as high as you can, keeping them together. You will probably not manage much, so get someone to push them right up to ninety degrees and hold. Push them more towards your face. Lift your posterior off the ground if you like. It sounds as if this one will really hurt, but it was all right for me.

These exercises were recommended to me by a personal masseur who has been extremely well trained. They are to suit my situation, so perhaps you had better take advice before trying them yourself.

Sciatica Pain - Ways to Cure Your Sciatica Pain

Inflammation and pressure on the nerve root is the cause of sciatica nerve pain. There are various treatments that can help to relieve this pain. The majority of treatment options are non-invasive and relatively simple. While in some more extreme cases, surgery may be necessary if the spinal cord has suffered any damage.

The use of pain killers is the most common way sciatica pain is treated. The usual medications used are anti-inflammatory and non-steroid muscle relaxers. Due to the high risk of addiction, opiate-based pain killers are used only as a last resort. Most health care providers will usually also suggested daily exercise to decrease sciatica pain.

The best treatment for sciatica pain is making lifestyle changes to help ease or prevent sciatica symptoms all together. By stretching and strengthening the leg and back muscles associated with the sciatic nerve, you can alleviate the pressure on the nerve which in turn will help ease your pain.

Simply by changing your posture, you can alleviate sciatica pain and back injuries. Bad posture could be putting a lot of extra stress on your spine, discs, muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves. When you're sitting, make sure that you're not slouching. You should not be leaning too far back or sitting too straight. You also don't want your head to be too far forward.

The human head weighs in at about 15 pounds, so if it isn't supported properly this can cause neck and upper back pain due to muscular strain. Don't let your head fall forward, keep a long neck properly supporting your head.

Keep the shoulders down and back, over the hips. When sitting for long periods of time be sure to have good back support. You will also want to stand and move around ever thirty or so minutes to help take pressure off of the back from sitting.

You need to maintain proper posture while standing too. Again you neck should be long not allowing your head to jut forward or fall to the side, shoulders should be back and don't allow them to hunch up towards your ears.

Keep your shoulders directly over your hips; hips should be in a neutral position. Your feet should be a comfortable distance apart with your weight evenly distributed over them.

If you want to be sure you are standing with good posture, look at the position of your shoulders. Are they aligned with your ears? Your chin should also be parallel to the ground, if it isn't you are allowing your head to fall forward or backwards which puts stress on the neck and back muscles.

Posture matters when you're sleeping, too. It is terrible for your back to lie down with a pile of pillows propping you up, or to sleep on your stomach. You can keep your spine in proper alignment by putting a pillow under your knees to keep them lightly elevated when you're lying on your back. Put a pillow between your knees when you're sleeping on your side.

If you are looking for sciatica pain relief that is natural and can be done in the privacy in your own home. Please read my report on how I was able to ease my back pain in less than a week!. This article, Ways to Cure Your Sciatica Pain is released under a creative commons attribution license.

Neck And Back Pain Relief - The Benefits Of Chiropractic Treatments

When people are suffering from pain in their neck or back, it can be virtually impossible to get anything done without even more pain. Just carrying out your normal life can bring constant pain.

This is a great time to learn about the benefits associated with chiropractic treatments. A few of the benefits that can be found are how quickly chiropractic treatments can help someone feel better, the advantage of not having to get surgery, the wide variety of therapy options employed, and also the ease of locating a chiropractic doctor.

Feeling better quickly is usually not the case at all with traditional treatments for neck and back pain. Often, there is not a lot Western doctors can do besides provide pain medication, which doesn't take care of the root reason for the problem.

A chiropractor, on the other hand, will be able to offer a variety of therapies that can bring virtually immediate relief to the pain. And long term treatment plans can keep the issues from coming back.

Surgery is occasionally one of the treatments a conventional medical professional will recommend for resolving specific kinds of pains an individual may be experiencing. On the other hand, this alternative is normally something a chiropractor will try to avoid. Through avoiding surgical treatment, it's frequently very apparent that the healing potential of your body is significantly superior to surgical treatment.

Treatment methods will vary greatly depending on the kind of doctor seen. Nevertheless, most chiropractors will use manipulations, massage therapy, ultrasound treatments, and various kinds of physical therapy to help be sure the individual starts to feel a lot better very fast.

Often, an adjustment can almost instantly increase range of movement in the affected area. Without having this kind of help, the person could wind up in pain for many weeks and be unable to accomplish their normal life.

The ease of finding a chiropractor is another nice advantage. Generally visiting a traditional doctor will result in a recommendation to see a surgeon. Yet, getting in to see them can very often take months since they need tests done first. With this kind of treatment method the chiropractors are normally located close to a person and they will typically write an order for x-rays if necessary, but you usually can see the chiropractor inside a few days of getting an appointment.

Getting successful treatment for neck and back pain can be hard if only conventional medical techniques are used. They're frequently ineffective.

Once an individual finds out the benefits of chiropractic treatments, they will often begin feeling a lot better in a relatively short time period. The big advantages are the fast recovery time, not having to go through surgical treatment, the various types of treatment used, and how quickly it normally is to locate a skilled chiropractor.

Chronic Pain Narcotics - The Risks of Narcotics Should Not Be Ignored

Written by David Greene, MD

Narcotics are often prescribed in the US for treating acute and chronic pain issues like reflex sympathetic dystrophy, degenerative arthritis flare-ups, and for post-operative pain control.

Narcotics may be very effective, but they are not without risks. One of the most concerning risks is that of overdose, which may be fatal.

It is very important not to take more than the prescribed dose, and also not to mix various sedating narcotics together or with other substances that may potentiate this effect. This may include alcoholic beverages or benzodiazepines like Valium.

Although overdoses are regularly seen in the public eye such as when a celebrity dies from one, they occur way too often. Sometimes patients overdose on narcotics on purpose, but typically it's just not being cognizant of the various cumulative effects.

If a patient has severe pain, he or she may just simply take more and more out of desperation, with an unintended fatal result.

Less than fatal side effects are common and may include light headedness, dizziness, drowsiness, or vomiting and nausea. Dry mouth is very common, which if experienced over a long period may contribute to tooth decay.

Along with this, one can see loss of appetite, nervousness, restlessness, headaches, blurred vision, and constipation.

One major risk of pain medications is tolerance. This is when individuals need a larger amount of narcotics to feel the equivalent effect of pain relief.

This can end up in a vicious cycle of narcotics spiraling where the person needs a lot more than what their pain condition should actually need.

Additional complications can involve clammy cold skin, extremely small pupils, bluish skin discoloration, extreme sleepiness, severe drowsiness, unresponsiveness, and slow heartbeat or low blood pressure.

Along with these risks, people taking these meds should let their provider know before taking narcotics:

Central nervous system (CNS) depressants, like antihistamines.

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, like phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate).

Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline (Elavil).

Anti-seizure medicines, like carbamazepine (Tegretol).

Muscle relaxants, such as cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril)

Sleeping pills, including triazolam (Halcion)

Blood-thinning drugs, including warfarin (Coumadin)

Naltrexone (Trexan, Revia). Cancels the effects of opioid analgesics.

Rifampin (Rifadin)

There are quite a few narcotics that come with acetaminophen in the mix, which can be harmful to the liver if too much is taken. So care should be taken not to take over 4 grams per day total.

Again, severe care should be observed with narcotics and patients should make sure to be under the care of a physician during use and only intake according to the dose that is prescribed.
